Obeying the Word of God

I Kings 13: 1 - 32

And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the Word of the LORD unto Bethel...

This is a strange story, but it has a very important message in it.  It involves a young man from Judah who was a prophet, his name is not mentioned, but God had spoken to him personally and told him to go prophesy to King Jeroboam.  Jeroboam was mentioned several times in the Bible as he "who made Israel to sin".  He was a wicked king.

The young prophet had found Jeroboam at Bethel, standing by the altar ready to burn incense.  Verse two of this scripture tells us that the young prophet cried against the altar in the Word of the LORD, and said; "O altar, altar, thus saith the LORD; Behold, a child shall be born unto the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he offer the priests of the high places that burn incense upon thee, and men's bones shall be burnt upon thee."  He continued the prophesy, and if you are not familiar with it, please read this chapter.  You will find that God gave a sign to Jeroboam to prove that what the young prophet was saying was God's established Word concerning Jeroboam.

King Jeroboam tried to persuade the young prophet to go home with him and be refreshed, but the young man refused saying: "If thou wilt give me half thine house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place; for so was it charged me by the Word of the LORD, saying, Eat no bread, nor drink water, nor turn again by the same way that thou camest."  So he left going a different way than he had arrived, just as the LORD had instructed him to do.

Here is where the story gets strange.  As the young prophet is leaving as God had instructed, he was approached by an old prophet.  The old prophet had a conversation with the young man and invited him to go home with him and eat.  Just as the young prophet had told King Jeroboam, he told the old prophet.  He simply could not go, because God had given him precise instructions forbidding him to eat or drink while there and to leave a different way than he had arrived.  The old prophet then explained to the young man that he, too, was a prophet, and an angel had told him to bring the young prophet home with him and feed him...but he lied.

The young prophet made a fatal mistake, and went home with the old prophet.  While sitting at the table eating, the Word of the Lord came to the old prophet rebuking the young man for not obeying the commandment given to him by God.  If you know the story, then you know that the young prophet was killed by a lion after leaving the old prophet's house.  The lion did not eat his carcase nor did it harm the young man's donkey.  The young prophet was buried in the old prophet's grave.  Verse 30  And he laid his carcase in his own grave; and they mourned over him, saying, Alas, my brother!"

This is a tragic reminder of how important it is to have a personal relationship with God, to know His Voice, and to be obedient to what the LORD speaks to us as individuals.  Follow God!  Know God!  Listen to God!  Obey God!  Don't be swayed to the right or to the left from what the LORD has given you.  How can you know God's Voice?  By knowing His Word.  His will never goes against His Word; read the Bible!!!

We can't be people followers!  Too many people have fallen away from God by having too much faith and confidence in another person.   Everyone of us must answer for ourselves, so we absolutely must be diligent about our personal relationship with God.  Philippians 2:12  Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
